Windows Server 2003 Pricing To Remain Flat But! Article Rating: Not Rated

As it gets set for the April 24 launch, Microsoft will price its forthcoming Windows Server 2003 on par with the existing Windows 2000 server yet the incremental cost for add-on services remain a big question mark.

The Redmond, Wash., software giant said Monday that Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition with be priced at $999 with five user or five device client access licenses (CAL) and $1,199 for 10 CALs, while the pricing for the enterprise edition -- similar to Windows 2000 Advanced Server -- will remain flat at $3,999.

The company's new SKU Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, will be priced at $399 but will only be available to OEMs and select channels. Likewise, the data center edition will be available though systems manufacturers who participate in the Windows Data Center High Availability Program.

However, Microsoft's plans for pricing forthcoming service add-ons for the Windows server remain unclear. For example, Microsoft plans to release its "Greenwich" real-time communications server add-on mid year and digital rights management services add-on during the second half of 2003 yet hasn't released any pricing on those additional, yet integrated. Channel sources say the real-time communications and digital rights management service will be offered as "plus packs' and will have separate price tags.

Microsoft also said Monday that it is repositioning and renaming its planned SharePoint Team Services collaboration services as yet another add-on service for the Window Server 2003.
