MS allows port of its software to Linux Article Rating: Not Rated

THE TIP OF TWO ICEBERGS have been sighted. Microsoft has licensed InterVideo to port Windows Media to Linux. The software is available right now, but not to your average Linux user. It looks like the software will only be available for consumer electronics devices. Reading between the lines, it looks like the software will only be available to manufacturers for inclusion in media devices based on Linux. There is certainly no sign of a free download for PCs.

The first tip of the iceberg is that Microsoft has obviously finally admitted that Linux really exists and that it has had to take real notice of the fact. Although the Vole has got a third-party company to do the port, there can be no doubt that this is an important step.

The second iceberg is definitely more the Vole we all know so well. The key behind the whole move is almost certainly digital rights management (DRM). Microsoft is making a play to become the gatekeeper for as much as it can stuff into its revenue streams. Unless Media layer is available on a whole host of different types of device it can't do that.
